Fort Lauderdale’s tap water often appears yellow due to naturally occurring organic matter called tannins. These leach into the Biscayne Aquifer as vegetation decays in the nearby Everglades. The city's primary, older Fiveash Water Treatment Plant uses a lime-softening process that cannot remove these tannins, leaving the water safe to drink but aesthetically discolored.Because of infrastructure upgrades, discolored water is occasionally more prominent during periods when the city flushes its raw water lines or shifts reliance solely to the older facility.Despite the yellow hue, city officials consistently reassure residents that the discolored water meets all state and federal drinking water standards. To resolve the discoloration long-term, the city is transitioning to the $666 million Prospect Lake Clean Water Center, which utilizes advanced nanofiltration to produce crystal-clear water.
